Ordem e Progresso, a motto from a French philosopher
The white banner crossing the blue globe of the flag carries three words: ORDEM E PROGRESSO - order and progress. They read at the centre of the lettering, on the letter that holds the globe.
The phrase is a shortened form of a motto by the French philosopher Auguste Comte, taken up by the founders of the Brazilian republic. A national flag quoting a Frenchman, on a beanie devoted to a discipline Brazil took worldwide: the loop is unusual enough to be worth pointing out.
On the practical side, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is one of the few combat disciplines trained almost entirely on the ground, in a gi, in a heated room. The beanie is not for the rolling: it is for before and after, on the way there and during the warm-up, when the body is already up to temperature.
What is on the beanie
Black ground. Two lines of very heavy capitals take the whole side: BRAZILIAN above, JIU-JITSU below, cut by a horizontal black rule. Inside the lettering, the flag of Brazil is masked in: green ground, yellow rhombus, blue globe scattered with white stars and the ORDEM E PROGRESSO banner.
