Boil and bite: a mould of your own bite
A stock mouthguard floats in the mouth: it shifts, it gets in the way of your breathing and it ends up spat out in the first hard round. This model softens in hot water, moulds onto your teeth, then hardens holding the impression. It stays put without you clenching your jaw to hold it there.

How do you mould a boil and bite mouthguard?
Drop it fully into boiling water for a few seconds, dip it briefly in cold water, set it on the upper teeth, press it into shape with your thumbs and suck to draw the material tight. Is it allowed in competition?
A mouthguard is compulsory in almost every combat sports competition. Some federations do regulate the colour, notably in amateur boxing where red can be ruled out so it is not mistaken for blood. Check your governing body's rules before an official bout; in training and sparring there is no restriction.
Single or double mouthguard?
This is a single: it sits on the upper jaw, leaves the lower jaw free and interferes less with breathing and speech. It is the most common format in boxing. The double protects both jaws, in exchange for more bulk.
