The essentials: on 13 November 1999 in Las Vegas, a Briton took back the undisputed heavyweight title — the first in a hundred years. This tee carries no nickname, no record and no opponent's name. It carries a place and a year.
And it needs nothing more, because that night a Briton took back a title his country had not held for a century.
Las Vegas, 1999: what happened
On 13 November 1999, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Lennox Lewis faced Evander Holyfield for the second time that year. Eight months earlier, at Madison Square Garden, their first meeting had ended in a heavily disputed draw — most observers had Lewis winning.
This time he left no room for doubt: unanimous decision, 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111. Lewis added Holyfield's WBA and IBF titles to his WBC belt and became undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
It is the weight of that win that justifies the date on the tee: Lewis was the first British boxer to hold the undisputed heavyweight title since Bob Fitzsimmons in 1899. A hundred years, almost to the day.
The glove is not decoration: Lennox Lewis was born in London but grew up in Canada — and it was in Canadian colours that he became Olympic super-heavyweight champion at Seoul in 1988, beating Riddick Bowe in the final. He then returned to Britain to turn professional. The Union Jack on this glove is a choice, not a given: it is the flag he decided to carry.
Lennox Lewis
- Born 2 September 1965 in West Ham, east London, to Jamaican parents. Left for Canada at twelve.
- Olympic super-heavyweight champion at Seoul in 1988 for Canada, beating Riddick Bowe in the final.
- Three times heavyweight champion of the world, and undisputed from November 1999.
- In 2002 he knocked out Mike Tyson in the eighth round.
- He avenged both his defeats in rematches — against Oliver McCall, then Hasim Rahman. No man beat him twice.
- His last fight, in 2003, was a win over Vitali Klitschko. He retired the following year, still champion.
What it looks like on
The glove filled with the British flag is the only coloured area on the tee — everything else is white, which pulls the eye to it before it reads the two arcs around.
LENNOX and LEWIS close the composition like a circle, with LAS VEGAS and 1999 in small capitals.
The whole print carries a washed texture from the outset: lettering eaten at the edges, flag run through with cracks. It reads like a fight-night tee kept for twenty-five years.
It is a knowing tee: it carries a date rather than a slogan. At three metres you read LENNOX LEWIS and see a flag-filled glove; at one metre the date appears, and anyone who knows what happened in Las Vegas in 1999 understands at once.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
The detail that matters: the print is applied by heat transfer onto a PET film. That is what gives the red and blue of the Union Jack their density on a black ground, and preserves the washed texture exactly as drawn, down to the small capitals of the date. The print stands up to wear and does not fade easily in the wash. Care: machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F inside out, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer, do not iron the print.
