In Mexico, canelo means cinnamon. It is the word used for redheads, and it is the nickname that has followed Saúl Álvarez since the gyms of Guadalajara.
Thirty years on, it fits inside a gold circle the size of a hand.
From Guadalajara to four crowns
Saúl Álvarez was born on 18 July 1990 near Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco. The youngest of seven brothers, several of whom already boxed, he grew up with the gym as part of daily life. His red hair earned him the nickname that would replace his first name on the posters.
He turned professional at fifteen, in 2005 — an age when most future champions are still amateurs. Almost two decades of moving up followed: from light welterweight to super middleweight, with a stop at light heavyweight. In November 2021 he gathered all four major belts at super middleweight and became undisputed champion of the division.
That is the career the crest sums up: a name, a year of birth, and the number of divisions crossed.
What 4-division world champion means
World champion in four different weight classes. This is not stacking belts inside one division: it is moving up and winning again, with a body rebuilt each time.
Changing division means facing heavier opponents, absorbing harder shots and losing relative speed. Very few fighters clear four steps. That line, set small under the star, is what gives the crest its weight.
A birth year, not a title year
The figure shown is the year of birth, not of a fight. That is the convention of club crests: you date the origin, not the wins. The advantage is that it does not age — a tee dated to a championship goes out of date at the next one.
What it looks like on
The crest sits at the centre of the chest, in a circle the width of a hand. CANELO closes the top of the circle, ALVAREZ the bottom, both in an arc, in a serif face cut to sharp points.
At the centre, the CA monogram set inside an angular star. Either side, 19 and 90, each underlined and overlined by a rule that balances the circle. Under the star, in small capitals over two lines: 4-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION.
All of it in a single gold ink, a matte gold close to brass. On black it carries a clean contrast without lightening the garment: the tee stays dark from a distance, and the crest reveals itself up close.
It is the most understated of the twelve Canelo models — the one you wear into town without announcing a boxing fan at ten metres / thirty feet.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
The detail that matters: this is a crest, not a portrait — there is no face on the artwork. That is what makes it the most wearable in the family: a gold crest reads like a club badge, and only those who know the CA monogram know who it belongs to. For artwork that shows the fighter, see the King Canelo or the The Face of Boxing.

Frequently asked questions
What does 4-division world champion mean?
World champion in four different weight classes. It is a rare achievement: moving up forces a fighter to rebuild his body, his speed and his range against heavier opponents. Very few manage it.
Why does the crest say 1990?
It is Canelo Alvarez's year of birth — 18 July 1990, near Guadalajara. It is split either side of the monogram in the manner of club crests, 19 on the left and 90 on the right, to balance the circle.
Why is he called Canelo?
In Mexican Spanish, canelo means cinnamon and is used informally for a redhead. Saúl Álvarez has red hair: the nickname stuck from his first fights and ended up replacing his first name on the posters.
How does it differ from the CA logo tee?
The treatment. Here the monogram is built into a circular gold crest, with the name, the year and the title. The CA logo tee shows the monogram on its own, on four light colourways. This one tells a story; the other signs.
Does it come in other colours?
Black only: gold takes its full depth on a dark ground. For Canelo in light colourways, see the CA logo or Can't Be Stopped.
Which size should I take?
Standard European cut: take your usual size. Seven sizes, S to 4XL, with the chest running from about 96 cm / 38 in to 132 cm / 52 in.
