of reading
The essentials in 30 seconds: standard AIBA and national federation dimensions are 6.10 × 6.10 m inside the ropes (20 × 20 ft), or 7.80 × 7.80 m overall. Four build types: floor level, on a platform, free standing and folding. Every ring needs at least 1 m (3 ft) of clearance all round.

Boxing ring dimensions
| Type of ring | Inside the ropes | Overall | Height | Ropes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small training ring | 4 × 4 m / 13 × 13 ft | ~5.5 × 5.5 m | Floor level | 3 or 4 |
| Standard training ring | 5 × 5 m / 16 × 16 ft | ~6.5 × 6.5 m | 30 to 50 cm / 12-20 in | 3 or 4 |
| Regional competition ★ | 6.10 × 6.10 m / 20 × 20 ft | 7.80 × 7.80 m | 91 to 120 cm / 36-47 in | 4 |
| AIBA competition | 6.10 × 6.10 m / 20 × 20 ft | 7.80 × 7.80 m | 91 to 120 cm / 36-47 in | 4 |
Practical rule: add 80 cm to 1 m (3 ft) on each side for the safety zones. A competition ring of 7.80 × 7.80 m needs at least 10 × 10 m (33 × 33 ft) of clear floor.

The 4 types of boxing ring
What is under the canvas
- 1Plywood, 18 to 22 mm — the structural base
- 2High-density polyurethane foam, 30 to 40 mm — impact absorption
- 3Insulating felt, 5 to 10 mm — thermal and acoustic insulation
- 4Tensioned non-slip vinyl canvas — the fighting surface
The quality of the floor matters as much as the structure of the ring. A floor that is too hard increases the risk of joint injury. Too soft, and it unbalances the base. High-density foam of 30 to 40 mm is the optimal standard.
Choosing your build type
| Build | Who it suits | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Floor level | Small clubs | Steel structure, 3 PVC ropes, no platform |
| On a platform ★ | Intermediate clubs | Platform, 4 ropes, multi-layer floor |
| Competition specification | Competition clubs | AIBA standards, installation included |
| Sanctioned show ring | Leagues, promotions | Federation certification, premium steel, warranty |
Installation: what to plan for
- Floor area: always count the ring plus at least 1 m (3 ft) all round for the safety zones and access for the seconds.
- Ceiling height: minimum 3.5 m (11.5 ft) for a ring at floor level, 4.5 m (15 ft) for a ring on a 100 cm platform.
- Floor: the ring must sit on a flat, hard surface. A floating wooden floor is not suitable — concrete or a concrete slab is recommended.
- Lighting: lighting must be even, with no shadow zones. For shows, plan additional lighting above the ring.
- Assembly time: free standing 5 × 5 ring: 2-3 hours with 2 people. Ring on a 6 × 6 platform: 4-6 hours with 3-4 people.
Caring for a boxing ring
- After every session: wipe the vinyl canvas with a damp cloth to remove sweat. A damp, slippery surface is dangerous.
- Every month: check the tension of the ropes and the straps. Tighten if needed. Slack ropes change the dynamic behaviour of the ring.
- Every 6 months: check the condition of the canvas — no tears, no bubbling — and the screws and bolts of the structure.
- Vinyl canvas: clean with a neutral product, never alcohol or solvent. Alcohol degrades vinyl and makes it slippery.

Frequently asked questions about boxing rings
What is the standard size of a boxing ring?
6.10 × 6.10 m (20 × 20 ft) inside the ropes under AIBA standards, so 7.80 × 7.80 m overall. For training, from 4 × 4 m to 6 × 6 m depending on the space. Add at least 1 m (3 ft) of clearance on each side for the safety zones.
How much does a boxing ring cost?
It depends on the build type, the dimensions and the quality of the materials: a training ring at floor level is the entry point, a sanctioned competition ring the top of the range. The price of each model is shown on its product page, in your local currency.
Can you install a boxing ring at home?
Yes, if you have at least 7 × 7 m (23 × 23 ft) and a minimum ceiling height of 3.5 m (11.5 ft). Go for a floor level or folding ring. The floor must be concrete or a hard slab — not a floating wooden floor.
What is the difference between a floor level ring and a ring on a platform?
A ring at floor level sits directly on the gym floor — accessible, more compact, ideal for daily training. A ring on a platform is raised 30 to 120 cm, reproduces real competition conditions and is required for sanctioned shows. The platform also gives better visibility for the crowd and the seconds.
Can a boxing ring be used for kickboxing or Muay Thai?
Yes. A standard boxing ring is perfectly suitable for kickboxing and Muay Thai. The only notable difference is the canvas: for intense Muay Thai, a slightly softer canvas is preferable to absorb throws. Dimensions and structure remain identical.
