How to clean and care for boxing gloves
of reading
In short: boxing gloves should be cleaned after every session. The method: wipe the inside with a damp cloth and a disinfectant, then air dry them open — never in a washing machine or a tumble dryer. Well-maintained quality gloves last for years.
Boxing gloves absorb litres of sweat every week. Without regular care they become a bacterial nest, develop an unbearable smell and break down early. The good news: five minutes after each session is enough to keep them clean and make them last.
Why should you clean your boxing gloves regularly?
A glove left uncleaned after training accumulates bacteria, yeasts and fungi within hours. The consequences:
- Skin infections: folliculitis, impetigo, ringworm
- Persistent smell: ammonia and anaerobic bacteria produce an unpleasant odour after 24 hours
- Accelerated wear: the salt in sweat attacks the leather and the foam
- Cross-contamination during sparring
How to clean boxing gloves — the correct method
- After training, open the closures fully and leave the gloves open.
- With a slightly damp microfibre cloth, wipe the inside of each glove to remove the sweat.
- Spray a sports equipment disinfectant, or an antibacterial spray, inside. Leave for 30 seconds.
- Dry the inside with a clean cloth. Absorbent inserts are optional, see below.
- Leave the gloves in open air, unfastened, somewhere ventilated. Never in a closed kit bag.
Tip: put cedar sachets or clean rolled hand wraps inside the gloves to absorb moisture and neutralise smells between sessions.
Can boxing gloves go in the washing machine?
No. A washing machine destroys boxing gloves. Heat distorts the foam, the agitation damages the structure, and standing water encourages mould. That holds even on a cold delicate cycle.
| Method | Result |
|---|---|
| Wiping and disinfectant (recommended) | Clean, gloves preserved |
| Washing machine | Gloves ruined in 1-2 washes |
| Tumble dryer | Foam melted, leather cracked |
| Hand washing with soap | Acceptable if rinsed and dried completely |
| Closed bag after use | Smell and mould guaranteed |
Monthly deep clean
Once a month, do a more thorough clean:
- Mix lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap.
- With a damp, not soaked, cloth, gently rub the outside of the glove.
- Wipe the inside with the same cloth.
- Dry with a clean, dry cloth.
- Leave to air dry for at least 12 hours before use.
Leather care — for premium gloves
If your gloves are genuine leather, apply a nourishing leather cream — lanolin or a colourless cream — to the outside every two to three months. This prevents cracking and keeps the leather supple.
How to get rid of the smell in boxing gloves
If your gloves already smell, these methods work:
- Bicarbonate of soda: sprinkle inside, leave overnight, shake out the next day.
- White vinegar: spray inside and let dry completely — the vinegar smell disappears as it dries.
- Freezer: put the gloves in a sealed bag in the freezer for 24 hours; cold kills most bacteria.
- UV: one hour in direct sunlight — UV has an antibacterial effect.
Prevention: hand wraps are the first barrier against sweat. Wash them after every session — it is far easier than washing gloves, and it multiplies their life.

Frequently asked questions — cleaning and caring for boxing gloves
Can boxing gloves go in the washing machine?
No. A washing machine ruins boxing gloves in one or two washes: heat distorts the foam, the agitation damages the stitching, and standing water creates mould. The correct method is wiping with a damp cloth and a disinfectant spray after every session.
How do you get rid of the smell in boxing gloves?
Three effective methods: bicarbonate of soda sprinkled inside overnight; white vinegar sprayed inside and dried completely; or 24 hours in a sealed bag in the freezer. The best prevention remains wearing wraps and leaving the gloves open to the air after every session.
How often should boxing gloves be cleaned?
After every session: a quick wipe, disinfectant, then open air. Once a month: a full inside and outside clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. For leather gloves: nourishing cream every two to three months.
How long do well-maintained boxing gloves last?
In PU with three sessions a week and good care: 1 to 2 years. In genuine leather, well maintained: 3 to 5 years. Gloves cared for properly keep their padding and their wrist support far longer than neglected ones, however premium.
