The fight of 2 July 2022
At twenty-seven, Opetaia faced the Latvian Mairis Briedis, IBF and Ring champion, on the Australian Gold Coast. Briedis was the favourite: more experienced, one defeat in his career.
During the fight, an uppercut broke Opetaia's jaw in two places. He told nobody, did not back off, and went the full twelve rounds.
He won on a unanimous decision: 116-112, 116-112, 115-113. He went straight to hospital afterwards.
He would beat Briedis a second time later on, confirming that the first result was no accident.
Three generations of fighters
The two flags on the artwork — Australia and Samoa — tell his family history. Opetaia is Australian-Samoan, and the boxing comes from both sides:
- His great-grandfather fought in Samoa
- His grandfather was New Zealand middleweight champion in the 1960s
- His father boxed in Australia in the 1980s
A southpaw, 1.91 m / 6 ft 3 in, he fights at cruiserweight — the division capped at 90.7 kg / 200 lb, just below heavyweight.
What it looks like on
The artwork covers the full height of the chest, in a dense collage — the busiest in the catalogue.
At the top, CHAMPION in large arched capitals, in a rhinestone effect: the letters are filled with bright facets.
At the centre, the fighter full length, bare chested, championship belt worn on his head, Polynesian tattoo on the arm. Around him, several black and white images overlap: portraits, fighting poses, belts.
Either side, the Australian and Samoan flags hang in folds, the only colour elements alongside the central figure.
At the bottom, Cruiserweight in white cursive script.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
