The UNITED trunks and the Cassius Clay years
The photograph comes from his early years: the build is that of a young heavyweight, and the waistband of his trunks reads UNITED — a kit maker of the period, not a title.
This is when he is still Cassius Clay, when the press finds him too talkative and the bookmakers have him losing to Sonny Liston. He has already taken Olympic gold in Rome in 1960, at eighteen, and nobody yet sees the greatest.
In February 1964 he beats Liston and becomes world champion. Within days he drops his birth name for Muhammad Ali — the name printed on this tee.
