No face, no gloves, no belt. A name and a neighbourhood.
Brownsville, Brooklyn
Mike Tyson was born on 30 June 1966 in Brooklyn and grew up in Brownsville, a neighbourhood where crime was part of daily life. Raised by a single mother, he knew the street early: by his teens he had built up a long list of arrests.
It was in juvenile detention that the trajectory changed. A counsellor and former boxer spotted his power and put him in contact with Cus D'Amato, a trainer based in Catskill, upstate New York. D'Amato took him on, trained him and eventually became his legal guardian.
Seven years later, at twenty years and four months, he was heavyweight champion of the world — the youngest in history.
Brooklyn is the starting point, then, not a champion's address. That is what this tee puts on record.
What it looks like on
Typography only, in white, centred high on the chest, over three lines:
- IRON MIKE in an arc, in athletic capitals with heavy serifs
- TYSON at the centre, framed by two large stars, with four small stars in a row above
- BROOKLYN at the bottom, on a straight line
This is the code of American team shirts: collegiate lettering, arc, stars. The same vocabulary as 1980s boxing gym kit.
On black, the contrast is at its highest. Heather grey softens the white and reads more worn-in.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
