English boxing asks a shoe for three things: to stay flat, to turn on the ball of the foot and to hold the heel. Everything else on a sports shoe — cushioning, drop, torsion bars — works against at least one of them.
What English boxing asks of a shoe
Flat, so the stance stays where you set it. Free at the collar, so the pivot goes through the ball of the foot. Firm at the heel, so nothing shifts when you sit down on a punch. This model does the three and leaves out the rest.
What it looks like
Smooth zones with a ventilated panel over the instep, a pull loop at the heel, and a scalloped padded collar. The outsole is flat with fine ribs across the whole surface and a bumper at the toe. The insole is padded and removable.

Frequently asked questions
How do I choose my boxing shoe size?
A boxing shoe should fit closer than a street shoe: no play at the heel, toes just short of the end. Measure your foot in the evening, when it is at its largest, and take your usual EU size unless you are between two — then size up.
Can you fit orthotic insoles in a boxing shoe?
The insole on this model comes out, so a thin orthotic fits. Avoid thick corrective insoles: they raise the centre of gravity, which is the one thing a boxing sole is designed to keep low.
What is the difference between low-top and high-top boxing shoes?
The collar height. A low-top sits at or just above the ankle bone and leaves the foot free for pivots and footwork. A high-top wraps several centimetres up the calf and braces the ankle, which suits boxers who plant their feet to punch.
How thick should a boxing shoe sole be?
Thin and flat. A boxing sole keeps you close to the floor so you feel the ground and pivot cleanly; a thick cushioned midsole raises the centre of gravity and costs stability.
Can you run or skip in boxing shoes?
Skipping, yes — the flat sole suits it. For road running, a cushioned running shoe is the right tool.
What is the difference with a wrestling or fitness shoe?
A wrestling shoe grips harder and has a thicker sole, which slows a pivot on canvas. A fitness trainer is built for lateral stability under load, not for turning on the ball of the foot.
