From Dagestan, in the Russian Caucasus, Khabib Nurmagomedov came out of wrestling — a discipline rooted in his region, where he trained as a child.

He became UFC lightweight champion in 2018, defended the title three times, then announced his retirement in October 2020, after his father's death and a promise made to his mother.
