This is the smartest piece in the collection. A collar, two buttons, a discreet chest logo: this polo goes where a t-shirt does not.
Two logos, and that is the real choice
Each colourway comes in two versions, and the difference is not cosmetic: it decides the register of the garment. They are two separate items in the selector, on the same colourway.
Treatment
| Treatment | The print | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Single-colour logo | Lion and lettering in one colour: white on the strong grounds, black on white and yellow | You want the plainest result: the logo blends in, and from a distance the polo reads as plain |
| Two-colour logo | Navy lion and red lettering, the brand's historic colours | You want the brand seen: it is the original Lonsdale signature, more assertive |
One case worth knowing: on the white and yellow colourways, the so-called single-colour logo is printed in black rather than white — otherwise it would be invisible. On the other five it is white.
The name comes from a belt
"Lonsdale" is neither a founder nor a place: it is the name of the Lonsdale Belt, created in 1909 by Hugh Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale, to reward the champions of Great Britain. It is the oldest championship belt in British professional boxing, and it is still awarded.
In 1960, the former boxer Bernard Hart had to ask the seventh Earl for permission to put that name on his gloves, from his shop in Soho, London. The full story is on the Lonsdale tank top listing.
What it looks like on
Pointed shirt collar, two-button placket, short sleeves with ribbed cuffs, straight cut. The collar gives the silhouette structure where a t-shirt stays informal: that is what makes this polo wearable at work, in the evening or at a formal event, without giving up the brand.
The logo sits on the left side of the chest, at a medium size. Being to the side rather than centred, it stays a signature rather than a print. The back is plain.
Seven colourways, four of them bright — yellow, orange, red, sky blue — and three classic: black, white, royal blue. It is the widest choice of shades in the whole Lonsdale range.
Premium cotton, soft knit.
The detail that matters: the print is applied by heat transfer onto a PET film. On a small-format logo like this one, that is what keeps the lion's mane and the serifs of the lettering perfectly legible at that scale. The print stands up to wear and does not fade easily in the wash. Care: machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F inside out, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer, do not iron the print. Wash the white separately the first few times.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two logos?
The single-colour logo blends in and keeps the polo reading as plain from a distance. The two-colour logo — navy lion, red lettering — is the brand's original signature and is meant to be seen. They are two separate items in the selector.
Why is the single-colour logo black on some colourways?
On white and yellow, a white logo would be invisible, so it is printed in black. On the other five colourways it is white.
Where is the logo placed?
On the left chest, at a medium size. Being to the side rather than centred is what keeps it a signature rather than a print. The back is plain.
Can you wear it somewhere formal?
That is what the collar is for. A pointed shirt collar and a two-button placket give the silhouette structure where a t-shirt stays informal — it works at work, in the evening or at a formal event.
Which colourways are available?
Seven: black, white, royal blue, sky blue, yellow, orange and red — the widest choice of shades in the whole Lonsdale range, each with two logo treatments.
Which size should I take?
Standard European cut: take your usual size. Chest runs from about 96 cm / 38 in on a S to 132 cm / 52 in on a 4XL.
