Rice straw tatami is the reference flooring for judo and the martial arts practised in a gi. Its textured surface reproduces the rice grain of a traditional tatami: it grips the bare foot, stands up to the friction of a gi and holds the footing through throws. Underneath, a cellular latex backing anchors the panels and keeps them in place.
The rice grain texture, made for the gi
The rice straw finish is not only a look: its relief gives grip under bare feet and purchase for the gi. Paired with a premium PU foam core and a cellular latex underside, it absorbs falls while keeping the area stable.
Which disciplines it is for
The rice straw finish is designed for gi practice, where grip comes first:
- Judo: the reference for standing work and throws (ukemi).
- Aikido: movement, breakfalls and pins with a secure footing.
- Ju-jitsu and traditional martial arts: a textured surface that takes hold of the gi.
For no-gi disciplines — MMA, wrestling, grappling — where the work is on the ground, look at our smooth vinyl tatami and its slick surface.

Which density to choose
The density of the core sets how firm the mat feels and how much it absorbs.
- 180 kg/m³ / 11 lb/ft³ — softer, well suited to children, schools and recreational use.
- 230 kg/m³ / 14 lb/ft³ — the judo reference density for throwing disciplines: firm and stable.
Which thickness to choose
- 40 mm / 1.6 in — the international standard, suited to most clubs.
- 50 mm / 2 in — extra cushioning for more frequent throws.
- 60 mm / 2.4 in — maximum cushioning, for intensive and elite practice.
Send us a room plan and we work out the layout
Quantities are expressed in panels: a 200 x 100 cm / 79 x 39 in panel covers 2 m² / 21.5 sq ft, and orders start at 10 panels, that is 20 m² / 215 sq ft. Send us the plan of your room with its dimensions at info@esprit-boxe.com: we draw the layout, work out the exact quantity and send a quote at the volume rate. The price shown is for one complete 200 x 100 cm / 79 x 39 in panel, and 10 panels cover 20 m² / 215 sq ft.
Customisation: your club logo on the mats
On request we print the logo of your club or gym straight onto the tatami, as on our bespoke installations. Customisation is available on this rice straw finish as well as on the smooth vinyl tatami, in the colourways of your choice, with a layout plan that positions the logos. Send us your logo and your room plan at info@esprit-boxe.com for a tailored quote.
Rice straw or smooth vinyl
Both tatami share the same build (vinyl, PU foam, latex underside); only the surface changes. The textured rice straw grips the bare foot and the gi: it is the choice for judo, aikido and ju-jitsu. The smooth vinyl tatami gives a slick surface that favours the ground work of no-gi disciplines (MMA, wrestling, grappling). For a floor that goes down and comes up tile by tile, see the EVA puzzle mat.
Frequently asked questions
Which disciplines is this tatami for?
The rice straw finish is designed for gi disciplines: judo, aikido and ju-jitsu. Its texture grips both the bare foot and the gi. For no-gi practice (MMA, wrestling, grappling), the smooth vinyl tatami is the better fit.
Why a rice grain textured surface?
The rice straw relief reproduces the traditional tatami: it gives better grip under bare feet, takes hold of the gi and keeps the footing secure through throws.
Which density should I choose: 180 or 230 kg/m³?
180 kg/m³ / 11 lb/ft³ is softer and suits children, schools and recreational use. 230 kg/m³ / 14 lb/ft³ is the judo reference density for throwing disciplines: firm and stable underfoot.
How thick should a judo tatami be?
40 mm / 1.6 in is the international standard and covers most clubs. 50 mm / 2 in adds cushioning for more frequent throws. 60 mm / 2.4 in gives the most absorption, for intensive and elite practice.
How many panels do I need for my floor area?
One panel measures 200 x 100 cm / 79 x 39 in, that is 2 m² / 21.5 sq ft. Divide your floor area in m² by 2 for the number of panels: 20 m² / 215 sq ft = 10 panels, which is where orders start, and the price shown is per panel. Send your plan and we work out the exact layout.
Can the mats be printed with my club logo?
Yes. On request we print the logo of your club or gym on the mats, on the rice straw finish as well as the smooth vinyl one, in the colourways of your choice. Send your logo and your room plan to info@esprit-boxe.com for a tailored quote.
