The 1976 film
Rocky was released in 1976. The screenplay was written by Sylvester Stallone, then an unknown actor, who refused to sell it unless he played the lead. It was shot on a small budget, in under a month.
It won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and launched a run of nine films, spin-offs included.
The soft hat and turned-up collar on the artwork come from that first film: they are the character's street clothes, before the fight gear of the sequels.
