Fairtex red gloves

Fairtex did not start out making gloves. Philip Wong founded Fairtex Garments Factory in Bangkok in 1971 as a textile business, and the Muay Thai camp came four years later, in 1975, near Lumpinee Stadium. The equipment followed the camp rather than the other way round — which is why the BGV1 is still the shape most fighters picture when they say Thai glove: compact, forward-balanced, made to clinch in.

The BGV1, the Fairtex benchmark

The BGV1 is the model that built Fairtex's reputation outside Thailand: a tight, compact hand compartment, an attached thumb and an internal grip bar that keeps the fist closed through a round. It is a Muay Thai glove first — the shape lets you clinch and catch a kick without the cuff getting in the way — and it works just as well for English boxing and kickboxing.

Genuine leather, premium finish

The shell is genuine leather and the pair is assembled by hand in Thailand. The leather breaks in over the first sessions and follows the shape of your fist rather than staying rigid.

Wrist support

The wide hook-and-loop strap wraps the wrist and closes on itself, so you can glove up alone in a few seconds and adjust the tension mid-session.

What oz should you choose?

• 8 – 10 oz: sanctioned bouts. Professional boxing uses 8 oz up to welterweight and 10 oz above.
• 12 oz: bag and pad rounds, lighter boxers.
• 14 oz: the all-purpose training weight.
• 16 oz: the sparring standard in most clubs.
