Rule 8 of the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, published in 1867, is the reason padded gloves exist at all: it required bouts to be fought with fair-sized boxing gloves of the best quality and new. Sparring inherited that logic — the glove is there to keep two people training tomorrow, not to win an argument today. These orange Esprit Boxe sparring gloves are built on that brief: hard-wearing leather, real shock absorption and a firm wrist hold.
Genuine cowhide leather
The shell is 100 % cowhide leather. It has natural give, it breaks in over the first few sessions and it takes on a patina instead of cracking the way coated synthetics do after a year of sweat. A pair meant to last several seasons rather than one.
Three foam layers
The padding stacks three foam layers of different densities. The outer layer spreads the impact, the core stays firm. You keep the feedback of the shot while your knuckles and your partner's head take less of it — which is the whole point of a sparring glove rather than a bag glove.
Hook-and-loop strap
The wide hook-and-loop strap lets you get in and out on your own in a few seconds and holds the wrist firmly, which matters when you glove up and down several times a session. The thumb is attached to limit thumbing and snagging.
Hand-stitched
Every pair is hand-stitched on the stress lines. The gold Esprit Boxe — For the Glory marking sits on the cuff.

What oz should you pick for sparring?
Sparring runs heavier than bag work, because the padding protects the person in front of you:
- 16 oz: the sparring standard in most clubs, whatever your body weight.
- 14 oz: light and technical sparring, pad rounds.
- 10 – 12 oz: bag work, mitts and speed rounds.
If you are between two weights, our boxing glove size guide sizes by body weight and by what you actually train.

Frequently asked questions
What size boxing gloves should I get for sparring?
16 oz is the standard for sparring and the size most clubs ask for, regardless of your body weight. 14 oz works for light technical sparring. 10 and 12 oz belong on the bag and the pads.
Are these real leather boxing gloves?
Yes — the shell is 100 % genuine cowhide leather, not PU. That is what gives the durability and the patina that improves with use, where a coated synthetic tends to flake after heavy sweat exposure.
Velcro or lace-up boxing gloves: which should I choose?
A hook-and-loop strap closes in a few seconds on your own, which suits training and sparring where you glove up repeatedly. Laces give the tightest, most even wrist hold and are the choice for competition.
Why do sparring gloves have more padding than bag gloves?
A bag does not have a jaw. Sparring padding is calculated for a human target: the three foam layers here spread the impact over a wider surface so the shot lands softer on your partner and on your knuckles.
Are these gloves suitable for beginners?
Yes. The three-layer padding and the wrist strap make them a forgiving first pair, and the leather holds up to years of use. A beginner heading into sparring should take the 16 oz.
How do you clean and care for leather boxing gloves?
Take them out of your bag after every session so they air, wipe the shell with a damp cloth and apply a leather balm once a month. Cowhide kept that way stays supple for years.
