There is a point in a coach's life when focus mitts stop being enough. When the student strings shots together without holding back, when sparring steps up, when punches come high and low without warning, it is the whole torso that has to be covered. That is what a chest protector is for: soft armour that takes the shots in place of the body, without preventing you from moving, turning or guiding.
Full coverage: what a chest protector actually covers
Where a belly pad is limited to the abdominal band, the protector rides up over the chest and drops onto the lower abdomen, wrapping the flanks. It covers the four areas that hurt in combat sports: the solar plexus, the liver on the right, the spleen on the left and the floating ribs.
That is what makes it necessary as soon as a session goes beyond pure body work: high shots, kicks, knees, free combinations. The coach no longer has to read every trajectory to shield the right area: present the torso and let the work happen.
45 mm of foam and anti-vibration construction
The padding stacks several layers of high-density foam to a thickness of 45 mm / 1.8 in. It is not only a question of volume: the stitching marks out compartments that partition the foam and stop the shock wave travelling from one end of the protector to the other.
In practice, the energy of a strike is dispersed locally instead of being passed to the chest in one block. That is what keeps a coach fresh after three rounds.
The facing is high-grade PU leather, chosen for durability: the protector keeps its shape and its finish session after session, and wipes clean with a cloth — a real point for kit shared between several coaches.
Size guide: from a young boxer to an adult coach
One particularity of this protector: it is chosen on the height of the wearer, not chest measurement or weight. Three sizes cover 100 to 190 cm / 3 ft 3 in to 6 ft 3 in, which equips a child in a beginners' class as well as an adult coach.
| Size | Height | Typical wearer |
|---|---|---|
| S | 100 – 140 cm / 3 ft 3 – 4 ft 7 | Child, youngest age groups |
| M | 140 – 160 cm / 4 ft 7 – 5 ft 3 | Teenager, slight build |
| L | 160 – 190 cm / 5 ft 3 – 6 ft 3 | Adult, coach, sparring partner |
Worth knowing for clubs: very few protectors on the market go down to 100 cm / 3 ft 3 in. Size S makes it possible to run children's classes safely, where an adult protector would hang off the shoulders and leave the stomach exposed. If a height falls on the boundary between two sizes, take the larger: the straps and clips take up the slack.
Straps and clips: on and set in seconds
The protector closes with adjustment straps on clips. That is the detail that changes things in a gym: put it on, clip it, set the length once, and it is ready. Between two students the coach takes it off in one movement without resetting anything, and hands it to a colleague without losing time.
The straps spread across the shoulders and the flanks pull the protector against the torso: it does not ride up on an upward shot and does not swivel on a hook.
Chest protector or belly pad: which one
The protector covers the whole torso — chest, plexus, liver, spleen, floating ribs and lower abdomen — and is the choice when a session mixes high shots, kicks and free combinations. The 60 mm belly pad concentrates on the abdominal band, stays lighter and leaves the torso completely free for body work. The 80 mm version adds the thickness needed for knees and kicks.

Brace on impact. The 45 mm / 1.8 in absorbs the bulk of it, and a braced torso takes it even better. Breathe out on the shot received. If the protector sits too high, tighten the shoulder straps.

Frequently asked questions
How do you choose a chest protector size?
On the height of the wearer, not chest measurement. Three sizes cover 100 to 190 cm / 3 ft 3 in to 6 ft 3 in. On the boundary between two, take the larger: the straps and clips take up the slack.
Is there a chest protector for children?
Yes. Size S covers 100 to 140 cm / 3 ft 3 in to 4 ft 7 in, which is rare on the market. It is what makes it possible to run children's classes safely, where an adult protector hangs off the shoulders and leaves the stomach exposed.
What is the difference between a chest protector and a belly pad?
Coverage. The protector takes in the whole torso — chest, plexus, liver, spleen, floating ribs. A belly pad concentrates on the abdominal band and stays lighter for pure body work.
How thick is the padding?
45 mm / 1.8 in of multi-layer high-density foam. The stitched compartments partition it, so the energy of a strike is dispersed locally instead of passing to the chest in one block.
Is it suitable for karate and taekwondo?
Yes. Full torso coverage suits any discipline where kicks come in, and size S makes it usable in children's classes. Check whether your federation requires an approved protector for graded work.
How do you look after a chest protector?
Wipe the PU leather with a slightly damp cloth after each session and let it air dry away from direct heat. On kit shared between several coaches, that wipe is what keeps it clean and holding its shape.
