Samurai MMA shorts

In short: The mask on this short is called a menpo. Samurai armourers sculpted it into a demonic grimace to unsettle an opponent before the first exchange — the oldest psychological weapon in fighting. 8 sizes, XS to 4XL. €39.
The mask that won the fight before the fight
The menpo was the piece of armour that protected a samurai’s face. It could have been smooth. Armourers chose the opposite: twisted features, a mouth open on bared teeth, sometimes a horsehair moustache. The purpose was explicit — to unsettle the opponent before the engagement.
The reasoning has not aged. A fighter’s walkout, the stare-down, the kit itself: all of it works on the same ground, which is the mind of the man opposite.
What the shorts look like
Red and black dominant. On the left leg, a samurai helmet and a horned red oni mask, jaws open, surrounded by armour motifs. A snake coils through the lower part, and a white fox head — the kitsune — sits at the hem. The right leg runs to a plain red gradient.
Clean side slits. Sublimated print.
Three Japanese figures on one leg
The samurai helmet, the oni mask and the white fox belong to three different registers: armour, demon and spirit. Putting them on one leg is a choice of accumulation, not of hierarchy.
The right leg stays a plain red gradient with no motif: it gives the composition somewhere to breathe. For the full detail of the fight short cut, see the grey geometric fight short.

Worth knowing: one loaded leg and one plain leg is unusual on a fight short. It means the design reads hard from one side and quiet from the other, which is worth knowing if you film your rounds.
Getting the size right
European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes, XS to 4XL, where most of the market stops at XXL on a fight short. The three figures on the left leg are scaled per size and keep their proportions. The drawcord takes up a change in waist measurement. In a groin guard, go one size up.

Frequently asked questions
What is an oni mask?
A Japanese demon mask, horned and open-mouthed. On armour the related piece is the menpo, the facial guard samurai armourers deliberately shaped into a grimace to unsettle an opponent before the engagement.
What is the difference between MMA shorts and boxing shorts?
An MMA short is built for the ground as well as the feet. It runs longer, to just above the knee, with a side slit on each leg so a closed guard and a leg pass do not bind the hip, and a flat drawcord waistband that stays tied when an opponent pulls on it. Boxing shorts have none of that.
Do these fit true to size?
Yes. European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes run XS to 4XL. The drawcord takes up a change in waist measurement. If you train in a groin guard, go one size up.
Does the print wear off in the wash?
No. The design is sublimated into the fibre rather than laid on top of it, so there is no layer to crack or peel on the mat. Wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F and skip the fabric softener.
Do these come in big and tall sizes?
Yes, up to 4XL. Most of the market stops at XXL on a fight short.
How do you wash MMA shorts?
Machine wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F, no tumble dryer, and no iron on the design. Avoid fabric softener: it coats the weave and slows how fast sweat moves through it.
