The essentials: a skipping rope weighted at 1.2 kg / 2.6 lb, in braided polyester of 25 mm / 1 in diameter over 3 m / 9 ft 10 in. Reinforced ends and rubber handles. It is a strength tool that works the shoulders, forearms and core on top of the cardio. €44, free standard shipping.
Weight changes everything. Where a speed rope weighing a few tens of grams turns by itself, this one has to be actively driven through every pass. The cardio is still there, but a strength element is added that no steel cable provides.
What the weight works
Keeping 1.2 kg / 2.6 lb in continuous rotation loads the shoulders and forearms first, since they drive the movement against the inertia of the rope. The upper back and the core stabilise the torso, without which the body starts swinging in time with the rope.
The grip takes its share too: holding a weighted rope for several minutes is grip work in itself, useful in boxing as in cross-training, where the hand often gives out before the rest.
Because rotation is slower, the jump rate naturally comes down. The aim here is not cadence but range and resistance, over shorter, more intense sets.
Construction
The rope is a three-strand braided polyester, 25 mm / 1 in in diameter — the thickness of a battle rope rather than a classic skipping rope. The ends are reinforced: that is the point that gives out first on a heavy rope, where the pull concentrates at the junction with the handle.
The ribbed rubber handles give a firm hold, which is essential when the mass in motion pulls on the hands at every rotation.

Start short. A weighted rope loads the shoulders far more than a classic one: several brief sets with a clean action are worth more than one long set. Build the duration once the arc stays stable from start to finish.
You may also like
- Metal skipping rope — a 3 m / 9 ft 10 in steel cable and 14 cm / 5.5 in metal handles, if you are after pure speed.
- Foam handles — 16 cm / 6.3 in ribbed foam handles, if your hands sweat on long sessions.
- Cordless with counter — a cordless mode and an LCD screen, if the ceiling is low or you track your sets.
All eight are gathered in the boxing skipping ropes collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is a weighted skipping rope for?
Adding strength work to the cardio. At 1.2 kg / 2.6 lb, the rope has to be driven actively through every pass, which loads the shoulders, forearms, upper back and core — and the grip, which often gives out first.
Is a weighted rope suitable for a beginner?
It is a tool for someone whose skipping action is already in place, since the arc has to stay stable against the inertia. To build the action first, a soft PVC rope is the place to start.
What are the weight and the length?
1.2 kg / 2.6 lb over 3 m / 9 ft 10 in, in braided polyester of 25 mm / 1 in diameter — the thickness of a battle rope rather than a classic skipping rope.
Can you do double unders with a heavy rope?
That is not what it is for. Rotation is slower by design, and the aim is range and resistance rather than cadence. For double unders, a steel speed rope at 170 g / 6 oz is the tool.
What floor should you use a weighted rope on?
A surface that takes the impact: wood, a training mat, tatami or rubber. Braided polyester is far less sensitive to abrasion than a coated cable, but 1.2 kg / 2.6 lb landing repeatedly deserves a floor with some give.
How long should a set be?
Short. Several sets of thirty seconds to a minute with a clean action are worth more than one long set where the arc collapses. Build the duration once the trajectory stays stable from start to finish.
