PVC skipping rope

The essentials: a classic skipping rope with a soft PVC cable and thick foam handles. The PVC cable is soft and forgiving: ideal for learning, warming up, or kitting out several people without spending much. Four colours: black, blue, green, red. €9, free standard shipping.
Not everyone starts on a steel cable with bearings, and that is just as well. When you are learning to skip, you miss. The cable catches the calves, snags a foot, comes through at an angle. On a steel speed rope every mistake stings. On soft PVC, you correct it and go again.
Soft PVC forgives mistakes
This is the real difference from the rest of the collection. A solid PVC cable is thicker, lighter and far less biting than a coated steel wire. It cracks against the legs with much less sting and makes learning noticeably more comfortable.
It also turns more slowly, which sounds like a drawback and is not one at the start: you have time to see the rope coming, synchronise the jump and correct the rhythm. That is exactly what is needed to build the movement before chasing speed.
One last practical point: PVC does not mark floors. A coated steel cable leaves marks on wood or pale tiles; this one does not.
Thick foam handles
The handles are covered in thick foam, generously sized. You hold them in a full hand without clenching the fingers, which avoids the forearm fatigue typical of the first sessions when people grip too hard.
Foam also limits slipping as the hands warm up, and stays pleasant in an unheated gym, where a bare plastic tube goes cold and hard.
Which length for your height
| Your height | Cable length |
|---|---|
| Under 1.60 m / 5 ft 3 in | About 2.50 m / 8 ft 2 in |
| 1.60 to 1.75 m / 5 ft 3 to 5 ft 9 in | About 2.70 m / 8 ft 10 in |
| 1.75 to 1.90 m / 5 ft 9 to 6 ft 3 in | About 3.00 m / 9 ft 10 in |
| Over 1.90 m / 6 ft 3 in | 3.10 m / 10 ft 2 in and above |
Checking the length: stand one foot on the middle of the cable and bring the handles up along the body. For a beginner they should reach shoulder height. Too long and the rope drags and breaks the rhythm; too short and you have to hunch.

Frequently asked questions
Which skipping rope to start with?
A soft PVC one. It turns more slowly, so you have time to see the rope coming and synchronise the jump, and it stings far less on the calves when you miss — which happens often at the start.
How do I check the length?
Stand one foot on the middle of the cable and bring the handles up along the body: for a beginner they should reach shoulder height. The table above gives the cable length for your height.
Can you do serious cardio with a PVC rope?
Yes. Cadence is what makes a session, not the cable: fifteen minutes of continuous skipping is demanding whatever the rope. A steel cable becomes useful when you start chasing double unders and top-end speed.
Does it mark the floor?
No. PVC leaves no marks on wood or pale tiles, where a coated steel cable does. That is one reason it suits training at home.
Why foam handles?
So you can hold them in a full hand without clenching, which avoids the forearm fatigue of the first sessions. Foam also limits slipping as the hands warm up and stays pleasant in an unheated room.
Is it suitable for a child?
Yes, provided the length is adjusted: the handles should reach shoulder height with a foot on the middle of the cable. The soft cable and the thick handles are exactly what a child needs to learn on.
