Lonsdale tank top

The essentials: in 1960, a former boxer had to ask an earl for permission to put the Lonsdale name on his gloves — the name of the oldest championship belt in Britain. This tank top carries the lion logo in orange and wide armholes that clear the shoulder completely. Premium cotton 180 gsm, heat transfer print. Black, 7 sizes S to 4XL, €29, free shipping.
The name is not a founder's and not a place. It is the name of a belt you cannot buy.
The Lonsdale Belt: the trophy behind the brand
In 1909, Hugh Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale, created a trophy for the champions of Great Britain in each weight division. The first version was made of porcelain and 24-carat gold.
It is the oldest championship belt in British professional boxing, and it is still awarded today.
Its rule is unique in the sport: to keep it for good, a boxer must win the British title three times in the same division. Since 1909, only 161 boxers have managed it, across all divisions. In May 2023, the Welsh fighter Lauren Price became the first woman to hold one.
The detail nobody tells: the brand exists only because permission was granted. In 1960, Bernard Hart, a former professional middleweight, wanted to start making his own gloves from his shop in Soho, London. To put the name "Lonsdale" on them, he had to go and ask the seventh Earl, James Lowther. He got it. A former boxer and an aristocrat: that is how one of the most worn logos in Europe came about.
And the Earl was more than a patron
The fifth Earl of Lonsdale, president of the National Sporting Club, did far more than fund a trophy: in 1891 he staged the first boxing match fought with gloves under the Marquess of Queensberry rules.
Put another way, the name on this tank top belongs to the man who helped move boxing from the bare fist to the glove.
A brand worn by the greatest
From 1963, Lonsdale worked with Muhammad Ali, then with Mike Tyson in the 1980s. That is what took the brand out of the gyms and onto the street, first in England and then across Europe.
What it looks like on
The lion and the LONSDALE LONDON lettering sit at the centre of the chest and leave the rest empty. On black, the orange comes through warm rather than harsh — a softer contrast than pure white, and it is what gives the tank top the look of a vintage piece rather than modern sportswear.
The wide armholes clear the shoulder completely: nothing restricts the rotation, which makes it the piece for bag work, weights and hot weather. Black is the only colourway — it is the ground on which the orange takes its warmth.
Premium cotton, crew neck, straight cut.
The detail that matters: the print is applied by heat transfer onto a PET film. On a single-colour orange flat, that is what gives a full tone and a perfectly cut lion outline. The print stands up to wear and does not fade easily in the wash. Care: machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F inside out, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer, do not iron the print.
