Lettering off a gym door
The artwork does not imitate a film poster but a signboard. The characters are thick, slightly irregular, as if stamped or hand-painted onto a plate.
The distressed treatment — letters eaten away in places, rules broken — imitates paint that has aged. It is the register of gyms that opened in the middle of the last century, before illuminated signs.
The first film in the series came out in 1976, written by Sylvester Stallone when he was unknown, and won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The series now runs to nine films, spin-offs included.

Is Balboa Boxing Club a real gym?
No: it is an imaginary club, built for the artwork. The idea is to take the graphic code of old boxing gyms — painted name, founding year, cut lettering — and apply it to a fictional character.
How does it differ from the other Boxing Club tee?
The treatment and the date. Here, lettering alone in sand gold, painted-sign style, in eleven colourways. The 1976 model is a circular crest with hanging gloves and stars, in nine colourways.
Why Philadelphia?
It is the city the character comes from and where the first film is set, hence the PHILADELPHIA, PA line under the name, laid out the way a gym signboard would carry its address.
