Kinshasa, eighth round
On 30 October 1974, in Kinshasa, Muhammad Ali fought George Foreman — unbeaten, the man who had beaten Frazier and Norton, and the pick of almost every observer. Ali was 32 and had not held the title for seven years.
He used a plan nobody expected: back against the ropes, guard high, elbows tight, and let Foreman punch. The tactic took the name rope-a-dope. The ropes, deliberately slackened, absorbed part of the work; Ali took seven rounds of it. In the eighth, Foreman was empty and went down to a short combination. It made Ali the second man in history to regain the heavyweight title — and he would take it a third time four years later.
What you see
Portrait format. Ali's face fills the upper half, framed head on, eyes turned slightly to the side. In front of him, two black gloves are painted at large scale, one at each side of the frame. At the centre, smaller and set into the portrait like an inlay, the Lewiston scene of 25 May 1965: Ali standing in white trunks, right arm drawn in, and Sonny Liston on the canvas at his feet in red gloves. Two smaller silhouettes of Ali in action stand out at the upper right.
The whole thing is worked in grey, black and off-white, with gold flecks shaped like butterflies thrown across the frame — an echo of float like a butterfly. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a face; from 1 m / 3 ft the fight scene appears inside it.

Worth knowing: two levels of reading on one canvas, which is what makes it a piece for a room where people sit, because it keeps giving up detail after several weeks. From 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in the inlaid scene reads from a sofa. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A scene set inside a portrait
The face carries the canvas from a distance, but the ring scene inlaid at the centre is only about a fifth of the height. Below 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in it reads as a smudge; from 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in the two boxers separate from a sofa, and at 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in the ringside faces appear. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What is the rope-a-dope?
The tactic Ali used against George Foreman in Kinshasa on 30 October 1974: back to the ropes, guard high, elbows in, letting the opponent punch himself out. The deliberately slack ropes absorbed part of the work. Foreman went down in the eighth.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
How many scenes are on this canvas?
Two: the portrait that fills the upper half, and a complete ring scene inlaid at the centre with a standing boxer and an opponent on the floor, plus the two painted gloves in the foreground.
How many times was Ali heavyweight champion?
Three: in 1964 against Sonny Liston, in 1974 against George Foreman in Kinshasa, and in September 1978 against Leon Spinks — the first man to take the title three times.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
