The Atlanta flame, 19 July 1996
On 19 July 1996, at the Olympic stadium in Atlanta, the last runner handed the torch to a figure who had been kept in shadow. Muhammad Ali stepped forward in front of more than three billion viewers. Parkinson's disease, diagnosed twelve years earlier, left his left arm shaking; he held the torch in his right hand and lit the fuse running up to the cauldron. The identity of the final bearer had been kept secret until that moment.
Days later the International Olympic Committee gave him a replacement for the Rome 1960 medal he had lost. That status — a boxer who became a public figure well beyond the ring — is what street art took up, on walls in dozens of cities.
What you see
Portrait format, the whole surface occupied. The boxer is painted from the waist up at the centre, red gloves raised, a gold crown on his head, the face worked in dark flat colour, mouth open. The trunks carry the Everlast mark on the waistband.
All around, a pile-up of graffiti and painted lines: King in very large white letters across the top, the world is yours in blue at the foot, I am gonna show you how great I am, be the best version of yourself, rock the world, don't count the days, make the days count, the words icon and victory, comic bubbles reading ough! and poof!, crowns and stylised banknotes. Colour covers every centimetre of the canvas.
From 3 m / 10 ft you read a mass of colour with a figure at its centre; from 1 m / 3 ft each line reads on its own.

Worth knowing: a canvas that covers its whole surface in colour behaves like an accent wall: it sets the tone of a room on its own and holds a span by itself. In a teenage room or a plain living room, 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in is the balance point. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
The size at which the lines can be read
The canvas carries about ten painted lines at different sizes. The two largest — the crown word at the top and the line at the foot — read from 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in; the small ones, which are what makes the background worth having, need 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What lines are painted on this canvas?
About ten, in English. The most legible: King at the top, the world is yours at the foot, I am gonna show you how great I am, be the best version of yourself, rock the world and don't count the days, make the days count, plus the words icon and victory and two comic bubbles.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
What happened at the 1996 Atlanta Games?
Ali lit the Olympic cauldron on 19 July 1996, in front of more than three billion viewers. His identity as final torchbearer had been kept secret. Days later the IOC replaced the Rome 1960 gold medal he had lost.
Is this canvas suitable for a teenage room?
It is one of the usual choices: full colour, readable lines, no depiction of injury. 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in suits a desk wall, 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in a bed wall.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
