The real fight that gave the film its idea
On 24 March 1975, in Cleveland, Muhammad Ali defended his title against Chuck Wepner, a liquor salesman from New Jersey nobody gave a chance. Wepner took the punishment, kept coming, and in the ninth round put Ali on the floor. He lasted until 19 seconds from the end of the fifteenth, when the referee finally stepped in.
A 28 year old actor watched the broadcast that night and left with an idea: a fighter with no future who is handed one chance and only wants to go the distance. The screenplay was written within days and the film came out the following year. Wepner later sued over the use of his story; the case settled in 2003.

Portrait format, deep black ground. The boxer is framed from the thighs up, in a guard with one red glove raised to chin height and the other lower in front of his chest, bare chested, mouth open.
The trunks carry the American flag — blue field, red and white bars — and form the second area of colour on the canvas. The body breaks up towards the edges into white spatter. Along the top, the name in small, widely spaced white capitals. From 3 m / 10 ft you read two red gloves and blue trunks on black; from 1 m / 3 ft the open outline of the body appears.

Worth knowing: a plain black ground needs a light wall for the edge of the canvas to stay visible. On a dark wall, a frame redraws the border and gives the ground its depth back. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Two areas of colour carry the canvas
