We say boxing shoe out of habit, but the original form is a boot. On the rings of the 1950s the upper ran high, the lacing came down almost to the toes and the sole was a few millimetres of rubber. That design has not moved much, for a simple reason: lacing that starts low lets you set the tightness along the whole length of the foot, from the toe to the ankle, instead of concentrating it on the instep.

Colourway and finish
The upper is black, with a gold band tracing an S from the collar to the middle of the side. The lacing runs through a double row of gold metal eyelets, eight visible pairs, and finishes under a folded tongue at the top of the upper. The official Esprit Boxe logo is applied in gold on the outer side. The sole is black, thin, flat, with no heel and no cleats.
Long lacing, and how to set it
A row of eyelets running low can be set zone by zone. Loose over the forefoot to let the toes work, firm in the middle to hold the instep, medium at the top depending on how sensitive the ankle is. Pulling the lace evenly from one end to the other cancels that advantage: take the tightening in three stages, locking each zone with a half knot.

Good to know: long lacing takes about thirty seconds more to put on. If you take your shoes on and off several times a session, the strap model closes one-handed.

What is the difference between a boxing boot and a boxing shoe?
The height of the upper and the length of the lacing. A boot runs higher and laces almost to the toes, which lets you set the tightness zone by zone. A low or mid top shoe concentrates the adjustment on the instep.
Should you size up in boxing shoes?
Not on this model. The scale is in European sizes: someone who wears a 42 in town takes a 42 here. If needed, measure the length of the foot and apply (3 × length in cm + 4) / 2. If the measurement falls between two sizes, take the larger: a thin sock makes up a few millimetres, the reverse does not.
How do you lace a boxing boot properly?

Does the thin sole give enough cushioning?

Are boxing shoes unisex?
Yes. The fit is unisex and the scale European. The width is standard: on a wide foot, taking the next size up and working the lacing gives more comfort than forcing the tightness.
How do you look after boxing shoes?
A damp cloth on the upper and the sole after every session, laces washed separately by hand, air drying. Never on a radiator: direct heat stiffens the assembly adhesives and shortens the life of the sole.
