Moscow, 25 December 1985
In the fourth instalment, released in 1985, Rocky Balboa travels to the Soviet Union to fight Ivan Drago, played by Dolph Lundgren, after Apollo Creed dies in the ring. The bout is unsanctioned, held on Christmas Day in Moscow in front of the general secretary and the Politburo, over fifteen rounds. Rocky wins it in the fifteenth, is lifted by his corner, wraps himself in the flag and takes the microphone in front of a crowd that has turned from hostile to cheering.
Two production details connect it to real boxing: the Moscow arena was rebuilt in a rink in Vancouver, and Stallone, who had asked Lundgren to hit for real, ended up in intensive care after a shot to the chest.
What you see
Portrait format, colour photograph on a dark ground. Rocky fills the upper half, head thrown back, face marked and running with sweat, bare chested. The flag covers his left shoulder and falls across his body; his red glove is still laced. His trunks pick up the red and white bars and the stars.
In the foreground, seen from behind, his trainer holds him up: shaved head, white jacket with the name BALBOA in large letters across the back. A third hand, on the right, holds the flag in place. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a man wrapped in a flag; from 1 m / 3 ft the name on the jacket and the marks on the face appear.

Worth knowing: the scene reads instantly, with no text to decipher, which makes it the Rocky canvas that works best in a corridor or an entrance where nobody stops. On a living room wall, allow 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in so the face and the name on the jacket stay legible from a sofa. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A marked face needs surface
The whole subject sits in the head thrown back and in the name readable on the back of the jacket — the two areas that lose most at small sizes. Allow 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in for both to hold from a sofa, or 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in in a corridor where you pass within a metre. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What scene does this canvas show?
The end of the Moscow fight in the fourth film: Rocky beats Ivan Drago in the fifteenth round on Christmas Day and is lifted by his corner, wrapped in the Stars and Stripes.
Who is the man in the foreground?
His trainer, seen from behind in a white jacket with BALBOA across the back — the corner man who worked with both Apollo Creed and Rocky across the saga.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Was the Moscow fight filmed in Russia?
No. The arena was reconstructed in a rink in Vancouver. Stallone had asked Lundgren to punch for real in the opening exchanges and was hospitalised afterwards for a blow to the chest.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
