Ali Bomaye t-shirt

The essentials: at 32, written off against an unbeaten Foreman, Ali took seven rounds with his back on the ropes before knocking him out in the eighth. Through all of it, a full stadium was chanting three syllables in Lingala. This tee carries that chant: ALI BOM AYE, in capitals filled with the American flag. Premium cotton 180 gsm, crew neck, heat transfer print. Black or white, 7 sizes S to 4XL, €29, free shipping.
Every other tee in the collection shows a fighter. This one lets you hear a whole stadium.
It is a product whose subject is not a man but a crowd.
What « Ali boma ye » means
It is Lingala, the language of Kinshasa. Literally: « Ali, kill him. »
The chant followed Ali everywhere in the weeks before the fight — in the streets, at training, into the stadium itself. Across from him: George Foreman, younger, heavier-handed, unbeaten. Ali was 32 and almost nobody gave him a chance.
On 30 October 1974 he took seven rounds with his back on the ropes, let Foreman punch himself out, then knocked him out in the eighth. The fight entered history as the Rumble in the Jungle. The chant never left it.
The detail nobody points out
Look at what fills the letters: it is the American flag. Blue star field at the top left, red and white stripes across the rest.
The chant came from Zaire; the man being cheered was American. The whole paradox of that night sits in one graphic choice — an African crowd carrying a United States champion, at a moment when he was in open conflict with his own country.
What it looks like on
ALI, BOM, AYE: three stacked lines in very heavy capitals, centred on the chest, closed top and bottom by a full-width horizontal bar — the whole thing reads like a stamp. There is no way not to read it.
The letters are filled with the American flag: the blue star field occupies the A and the L of the first line, the red and white stripes run across everything else, the two bars included.
The whole surface is distressed from new: breaks, chips and scratches run through the flat areas. The tee arrives looking like a poster that stayed up on a wall too long.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
Black or white: two readings
| Colourway | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| Black | All three flag colours carry — the words read as one block from across a room |
| White | The white stripes merge into the fabric: the letters read as open-worked, a more graphic result |
The detail that matters: the breaks and chips in the letters are printed in from new — it is the peeling-poster idea, and it will not spread in the wash. This tee shows no face at all: it is a chant, not a portrait, and that is what makes it unique in the collection. For a portrait of Ali, see the arms crossed or the gold face.

Frequently asked questions
What does Ali boma ye mean?

Which fight is this about?
The Rumble in the Jungle, on 30 October 1974 in Kinshasa. Written off against George Foreman, Ali took seven rounds on the ropes before knocking him out in the eighth and becoming heavyweight champion again at 32.
Why the American flag inside the letters?
It is the point of the design, and the paradox of the fight: the chant came from Zaire, the man being cheered was American. The blue star field takes the A and the L of the first line; the red and white stripes run across the rest.
What was the rope-a-dope?
The tactic Ali used that night: leaning back into the ropes, covering up and letting Foreman throw for seven rounds in the Kinshasa heat until his opponent had nothing left. Ali then took him out in the eighth.
Which colourway should I choose?
Black so the words read as one block from a distance; white for a more graphic result — the white stripes of the flag merge into the fabric and the letters read as open-worked.
