The essentials: black long beanie with an aged gold marking: CLAY lettering in very large capitals and a pair of laced boxing gloves, printed over the whole surface. Long cut with no cuff, one size. €29, free delivery.
The name from before the title
Cassius Clay is the name Muhammad Ali boxed under until early 1964: Olympic light heavyweight gold in Rome in 1960, then the world heavyweight title taken from Sonny Liston in Miami Beach on 25 February 1964. He announced his change of name shortly after that win.
Wearing that name rather than the other one is not getting the era wrong: it points precisely at the years of the climb - the amateur, the unbeaten young professional, and the night the title changed hands.
What is on the beanie
Black ground. The CLAY lettering takes the lower side in very large gold capitals with a cracked texture. Above it, a pair of laced boxing gloves, drawn in outline and filled with the same gold. A raised numeral sits to the right, in a sports jersey typeface.
The print covers the whole surface: the design continues round the back and over the top of the beanie.

The tip: gold on black reads from a distance and sits well with plain dark clothing. Over something already printed, the two designs compete for the eye.

Frequently asked questions
Are Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali the same person?
Yes. Cassius Clay is the name he boxed under until early 1964, the year of his world heavyweight title against Sonny Liston, before announcing his change of name.
Why does it say Clay and not Ali?
Because the name marks a period: the Rome 1960 Olympic gold, the unbeaten young professional, and the Liston fight. It points at the years of the climb rather than the later career.
What is printed on this beanie?
The CLAY lettering in cracked gold capitals, a pair of laced boxing gloves and a numeral in a jersey typeface, on a black ground.
What size is a long beanie?
One size: the knit stretches both ways and absorbs the difference in head size. The guide is visual - the beanie should cover the top of the ears without squeezing the temples. Flat it measures 28 cm / 11 in tall by 26.8 cm / 10.6 in wide.
What is the difference between a long beanie and a turn-up beanie?
The long beanie, or slouchy, falls on the nape with no cuff and is worn loose: that is the cut of this model. The turn-up knit folds over and lays a double thickness of knit on the ears, for a height of 21.5 cm / 8.5 in once folded.
How do you wash a beanie without stretching it?
Hand wash cold, no spin, then dry flat. A beanie hung up or put through a tumble dryer stretches out and loses the hold that keeps it over the ears. Do not iron the print.
