The name, then the record
Born Marvin Nathaniel Hagler on 23 May 1954 in Newark, he was signing autographs "Marvelous Marvin" from his amateur days. Television networks announced him without it. In 1982 he settled the matter in front of a judge.
The record backs the name up:
- Undisputed middleweight champion from 1980 to 1987, WBA, WBC and IBF titles unified
- Twelve successful title defences, over a reign of six years and seven months — the second longest of the last century in the division
- 62 wins, 52 inside the distance, against 3 losses and 2 draws
- 78% of his wins by knockout — the highest rate of any undisputed middleweight champion
His most famous fight remains April 1985 against Thomas Hearns: put down in the first round, he got up and won by knockout in the third. Three rounds widely held to be the most intense in the sport's history.
Brockton
The town on the artwork is where he learned to box, in Massachusetts. He arrived there after the Newark riots of 1967 and trained with the Petronelli brothers, who would be his trainers and managers for his whole career.
Brockton is also the town of Rocky Marciano, the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated.
What it looks like on
The artwork covers the full height of the chest, in white and pale blue on the black.
At the top, Marvelous in light blue cursive script, then MARVIN in large white capitals, slightly arched.
At the centre, a black and white photograph: Hagler in guard, head shaved, championship belt at the waist, looking straight into the lens.
At the bottom, HAGLER in large white capitals, then Brockton in blue script, framed by six stars.
The largest word on the artwork is not the nickname but the surname — the two read as equals, which is exactly what his legal name says.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
