Thirty-three years in the ring. No boxer in the catalogue lasted as long.
Manos de Piedra
Born in Panama in 1951, Roberto Durán turned professional at sixteen, in 1968. He had his last fight in 2001, at fifty.
The nickname comes from his punching power, exceptional for a lightweight: he ruled the division through the 1970s before moving up to welterweight.
He was world champion in four different divisions — lightweight, welterweight, light-middleweight and middleweight — which was almost unheard of at the time.
His best-known fight remains the win over Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980. He also faced Marvin Hagler in 1983, leading on the cards into the thirteenth before losing narrowly.
The ringer cut
This is not a plain tee with a print on it: it is a ringer, a construction where the collar and sleeve bands are in a contrast colour, sewn on separately from the body.
It is the cut of American sports tees from the 1960s and 1970s — exactly the period when Durán started.
Because the contrast is part of the garment, it cannot fade out in the wash.
What it looks like on
The body — plain white.
The collar and cuffs — bright red, in rib.
The print — ROBERTO DURAN in large red capitals, in lettering arched downward: the letters at the centre sit lower than those at the ends, with two horizontal bars closing the composition top and bottom.
Under the lower bar, MANOS DE PIEDRA in small capitals.
No portrait: it is.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.

Frequently asked questions
What does Manos de Piedra mean?
"Hands of stone", in Spanish. The nickname comes from Durán's punching power, exceptional for a lightweight — the division he ruled through the 1970s before moving up.
In how many divisions was he world champion?
Four: lightweight, welterweight, light-middleweight and middleweight. At the time that was almost unheard of.
What is a ringer t-shirt?
A tee whose collar and sleeve bands are in a contrast colour, sewn on separately from the body — here white with red trim. It is the cut of American sports tees from the 1960s and 1970s, and the contrast cannot fade out in the wash.
Is there a portrait on this tee?
No: the print is entirely typographic — the name in arched capitals between two bars, with MANOS DE PIEDRA beneath. It is.
Does it come in big sizes?
Yes, up to 4XL: S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL and 4XL, all at the same price. It is a ringer to go that far — the other two stop at XXL.
Which size should I take?
Standard European cut: take your usual size. Chest runs from about 96 cm / 38 in on a S to 132 cm / 52 in on a 4XL.
