A record that has held for forty years, summed up in two figures.
22 November 1986
Tyson faced Trevor Berbick for the WBC heavyweight title. The fight was stopped in the second round: hurt, Berbick got up three times before the referee ruled he was in no state to continue.
Tyson was twenty years, four months and twenty-three days old. He took apart the precocity record held by Floyd Patterson — the other great champion produced by Cus D'Amato, his trainer, who had died a year earlier.
He went on to unify the WBA and IBF titles and became undisputed heavyweight champion at twenty-one. Nobody has taken that precocity record back since.
« The Baddest Man on the Planet »
The phrase became his unofficial nickname from that period onwards. In American slang bad here means formidable — not wicked, but the last man on earth you would want across from you.
It rested on numbers: across his first nineteen professional fights, Tyson won twelve in the first round.
What it looks like on
An entirely typographic composition, centred on the chest, in cream and red on navy.
Top to bottom: BROOKLYN'S FINEST in a red arc, Mike Tyson in very large cream cursive script, WORLD CHAMP '86 in bold capitals, THE BADDEST MAN ON THE PLANET in red either side of a rule, and U·S·A in script to close.
Behind the lettering, a red silhouette shows through — a boxer in guard, partly hidden by the words.
The whole print is weathered: letters slightly eaten away, colours faded, like an old screen print.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
