In the late 1980s several of Tyson's opponents admitted they had lost at the stare-down. It was not a figure of speech: across his first nineteen professional fights, twelve ended in the first round, and his final ratio reached 44 knockouts in 50 wins, or 88 per cent.
Against Michael Spinks in 1988, the most anticipated fight of the era lasted 91 seconds. Against Marvis Frazier, two years earlier, 30 seconds.
