The neighbourhood is part of the story
Tyson was born on 30 June 1966 and grew up in Brownsville, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Brooklyn. At 13 he was placed in a juvenile detention centre after dozens of arrests.
It was there that a counsellor, a former boxer, spotted his power and introduced him to Cus D'Amato. D'Amato brought him to Catskill in upstate New York and became his legal guardian when Tyson's mother died. Seven years later, the world title. The year printed at the centre of this crest is his year of birth.
The artwork
