GOAT stands for Greatest Of All Time. The case for it is a run of dates: the WBC title on 22 November 1986 at 20 years and 4 months, the WBA on 7 March 1987, the IBF on 1 August 1987.
At 21 years and one month, Tyson held all three — the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion in history. In the photograph printed here he is wearing exactly those belts. The design does not rest on a slogan: it shows the thing being argued.
The artwork
GREATEST OF ALL TIME in small spaced type across the top, then GOAT in giant neon green capitals, the only bright colour in the print. The boxer is cut out of the lettering: his head passes in front of the O, his shoulders in front of the A and the T.
The photograph is in posterised greyscale, bare chested, black trunks, fists low at his sides, white wraps on the wrists. Plain back. The neon green is the only part of the print that catches the light: from a distance you see four letters, and the figure appears as you get closer.
