The bare fist left the octagon in 1997
At the first UFC tournaments fighters came in with their hands free: Royce Gracie won the 1993 tournament without gloves. Open-finger gloves, padded across the back of the hand, became mandatory from UFC 14, on 27 July 1997. They protect the striker's metacarpals while still letting the hand grip — and that trade-off is what made the discipline sustainable.
This neon goes back to the gesture from before the equipment: the closed fist, face on, knuckles forward.
What the visual shows
A closed fist seen face on, four knuckles in a line at the top, thumb folded across the side, forearm cut at the wrist. Below the wrist, the word MMA in small capitals. Everything is drawn in a single continuous line, in one shade. The composition sits in a square.
The ten colours
The colour is set at the order and stays that way: Blue, Orange, Yellow, Warm white, Polar blue, Green, Red, Pink, White and Purple. Warm white leans towards the amber of old signs, polar blue towards a bluish white.
Your size
The rule of thumb: a lit piece covers about two thirds of the width of whatever it hangs above, centred 150 cm / 59 in off the floor. The wall size chart sets out the match by wall type, from a desk to a full home-gym wall.

Good to know. This is a square piece, 50 x 50 or 100 x 100 cm / 20 x 20 or 39 x 39 in. On a narrow wall between two doors, or in a corner, it uses the height where an elongated format would ask for width. The 100 x 100 cm needs a clear panel of at least 1.50 m / 5 ft each way.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an LED neon and a real gas neon?
A gas neon is a fragile glass tube running on high voltage. LED flex is a soft silicone rope mounted on an acrylic backing: the same continuous line, no glass, no heat, instant switch-on. It is what almost every sign called a neon uses today.
How do you hang an LED neon on a wall?
The clear acrylic backing is drilled around its edge. Plugs and screws go into the wall, then the backing sits flush against them. Allow one fixing point every 30 to 40 cm / 12 to 16 in; standard plasterboard is enough.
Why do MMA gloves leave the fingers free?
Because the discipline allows grappling: a fighter has to grip an opponent, control a wrist, hunt a submission. The padding is therefore limited to the back of the hand. They have been mandatory in the UFC since 1997.
What size of neon suits a narrow wall?
The square 50 x 50 cm / 20 x 20 in is made for it: between two doors, in a corner or above a console, it fits 60 to 110 cm / 24 to 43 in of available width. The wall size chart sets out the other cases.
Is there a rectangular version of the MMA design?
Yes, the MMA neon carries the lettering alone in 50 x 20 or 100 x 40 cm / 20 x 8 or 39 x 16 in, for a wall wider than it is tall.
