There was a great day for boxing, and it has a date. In 1882 John L. Sullivan became the first world champion crowned under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, published fifteen years earlier. He was also the last world champion to fight bare-knuckle. Between those two titles sits the whole turn of the sport: from fairground entertainment to a regulated contest, with gloves, three-minute rounds and a referee.
