The line printed on this mat is more than a slogan. In 2006, in Indianapolis, Scott Newman — a former Marion County prosecutor diagnosed with Parkinson's at 40 — began training in boxing with his friend Vince Perez, a former Golden Gloves fighter. Within months his balance, flexibility and grip strength had improved and his tremors had receded. With world champion Kristy Rose Follmar the two men founded Rock Steady Boxing, a non-contact boxing programme for people with Parkinson's. It now runs in more than 900 affiliated gyms and has worked with over 50,000 people. Boxing as therapy has an address and a date.
What is printed
Two red gloves at the centre, one crossed over the other, and three lines of text: BOXING in white capitals, IS MY in small type, then Therapy in slanted red script. The ground is plain black. At three metres / ten feet you pick out the two red gloves; at one metre / three feet you read the whole line.
Which size for which door
The rule is simple: the mat should be a little wider than the opening it sits in front of, so both feet fit on it without spilling onto bare floor. A mat narrower than the door gets walked around instead of used.
Technical specifications
Good to know. The print runs edge to edge with no white margin, on all three sizes. The artwork is set up for each size, so the design keeps its proportions rather than being simply scaled up.

40 x 60 cm / 16 x 24 in suits a 70 to 80 cm / 28 to 31 in door, 50 x 80 cm / 20 x 31 in a standard 90 cm / 35 in front door, and 60 x 90 cm / 24 x 35 in a double door or a kitchen sink front. Pick a mat slightly wider than the opening, otherwise people step around it instead of on it.
Can a doormat go in the washing machine?
This one can, then dry it flat. Flat drying keeps the gripper backing in shape, which is where every non-slip mat suffers in a tumble dryer.
