Where the line comes from
It was said in 1996, before the fight against Evander Holyfield. A reporter asked Tyson what he made of the strategy his opponent had spelled out in the press. The answer: « Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. »
What followed proved him wrong — Holyfield stopped him in the eleventh — but the sentence stayed. It now turns up in management writing, in military strategy and in crisis planning, often quoted by people who have no idea it came from a fighter.
It is not bravado, it is a technical observation. A fight plan assumes you keep your faculties; the first clean shot to the face removes that assumption.
