Four years before the world title, Tyson is not yet a professional. He trains at Catskill under Cus D'Amato and takes the amateur circuit apart: he wins the Junior Olympics two years in a row, in 1981 and 1982, with wins measured in seconds.
It is also the year his mother dies. Tyson is sixteen. D'Amato formally becomes his legal guardian, and Catskill his only home.
At that point people call him Kid Dynamite. The name Iron Mike comes later, with the professional years.
