Three fights, fourteen years of rivalry
On 8 March 1971, at Madison Square Garden, Ali and Joe Frazier met for the first time. Both were unbeaten and both claimed the heavyweight title: the press called it the Fight of the Century. Each man took a purse of 2.5 million dollars, a record for the time.
Frazier won on points over fifteen rounds, having put Ali down in the fifteenth with a left hook. Ali took the rematch in 1974, and the two met again on 1 October 1975 in Manila, in a hall where the temperature passed 38 °C / 100 °F. It was stopped after the fourteenth round when Frazier's corner refused to send him out. Ali said afterwards that the night had taken him as close to death as he had been. Those three nights are what this canvas stands for.
What you see
Landscape format, a black and white photograph in which only the two boxers are recoloured. Ali holds the right of the frame: legs wide apart, upper body arched backwards out of range, red trunks with a broad white waistband, white boots with red stripes. Frazier comes forward on the left, red gloves up, green trunks with a yellow pattern, white boots.
Everything else — the ropes, the canvas, the rows of spectators, the lights ranked across the ceiling — stays grey. From 3 m / 10 ft you read two patches of colour in a grey hall; from 1 m / 3 ft the faces in the front row become visible.

Worth knowing: the landscape crop makes this one of the few canvases in the collection that sits over a sofa without leaving gaps at the sides. Over a three-seater, 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in covers two thirds of the width. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A wide crop where the setting counts
The hall takes up as much surface as the two boxers, and it is what gives the scale. Below 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in the crowd turns into grey texture; from 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in the front rows and the overhead lights read from a sofa. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
How many times did Ali and Frazier fight?
Three: Madison Square Garden on 8 March 1971, which Frazier won on points; the rematch in 1974, which Ali won; and the Thrilla in Manila on 1 October 1975, stopped after fourteen rounds when Frazier's corner pulled him out.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Why is the 1971 fight called the Fight of the Century?
Because both men came in unbeaten and both had a claim to the heavyweight title — Frazier as champion, Ali as the man never beaten for it. Each took 2.5 million dollars, a record purse at the time, and the Garden was full of the era.
Is this a painting or a photograph?
A photograph, retouched: the original is black and white and only the two boxers have been recoloured — red trunks for Ali, green and yellow for Frazier. The hall, the crowd and the ropes stay grey.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
