A one million dollar film that won Best Picture
On 28 March 1977, at the 49th Academy Awards, the film won Best Picture. It was up against Taxi Driver, Network and All the President's Men. It also took Best Director and Best Film Editing.
Its budget was around one million dollars — small even for the time — for a shoot wrapped in under thirty days, and it took more than a hundred million at the box office. It remains one of only two boxing films to have taken the ceremony's top award.
What you see
Portrait format, dark ground. The title fills the top in heavy red capitals, with a small figure with arms raised set inside the letter O. Below, a black and white photograph: the boxer stands at the centre of the ring, bare chested, arms at his sides, a wide-plated championship belt buckled at the waist and two dark gloves with white cuffs hanging from his arms.
Behind him, the ring ropes in red and a bank of lights. The red of the title and the red of the ropes are the only colour in the composition. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a red word on a dark ground; from 1 m / 3 ft the belt plate and the grain of the photograph appear.

Worth knowing: this is the only Rocky canvas that shows the champion still, after the fight, rather than in action. The red of the title and the ropes against a dark ground makes it straightforward to hang in a room of wood or leather. A title that carries the canvas from a distance
The word in red capitals runs the full width of the top, which keeps the canvas legible even at small sizes — not the case for the pieces with fine text. 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in already holds a corridor; 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in lets the belt plate read from a sofa. Is this canvas entirely black and white?
Almost: the photograph is, and red appears in two places only — the title in capitals above the boxer and the ring ropes behind him. Those two areas give the composition its depth.
