A trumpet fanfare that topped the Billboard chart
The theme Bill Conti wrote for the 1976 film is called Gonna Fly Now. It runs under three minutes, opens on a rise of brass, and started life as background for a training sequence.
Released as a single, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1977 — very rare for an instrumental film theme — and was nominated for an Academy Award the same year. It is still the most played track in American gyms before a session. This poster belongs to that moment: the layout, the colours and the lettering are those of late 1970s cinema posters.
What you see
Portrait format, lightly textured cream ground. At the centre, a pair of red boxing gloves, laces trailing, hung by the lace and drawn in flat colour with hatching. Behind them, the title is repeated about ten times in large capitals, in red and purple, at different sizes and angles, forming a typographic weave.
Bottom left, the credits in small red type — Sylvester Stallone, Carl Weathers, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire, then the title — as on a period poster. From 3 m / 10 ft you read two red gloves on a light ground; from 1 m / 3 ft the repeated lettering becomes readable.
