A boxing poster without a single punch
The original poster, from 1976, shows no ring, no gloves and no opponent: two figures seen from behind, a man in trunks and a woman in a coat, walking hand in hand. The tagline calls it a life played at a million to one. The choice was counter-intuitive for a sports film, and it explains a good part of the success: the first instalment was sold as a story about two people, not as a fight film.
It opened in American cinemas on 3 December 1976 — the date still appears on the flag poster — and took more than a hundred times its budget. The three other posters here carry the story on: the awards won in March 1977, the return of the character thirty years later, and the graphic flag version.
The four posters
Academy Award poster. White ground, a top band listing the three awards won, and a black and white photograph: a figure with arms raised above a snow-covered park, a monument behind him. Title in heavy black capitals, credits at the foot.
Rocky Balboa poster. White ground, the title on two lines in very large capitals, and a figure seen from behind in a hooded tracksuit, fist raised, against a winter landscape. Tagline in small type above: it is not over until it is over.
Original 1976 poster. White ground, title in black capitals, and the two figures walking hand in hand. Tagline above, full credits at the foot.
Flag poster. Black ground inside a cream border, red bars and stars of the American flag across the top, title in white letters, and a solid white silhouette with the fist raised. Cinema announcement and credits in small type at the foot.

Worth knowing: the selector changes the poster, not the size or the price: all four versions come in the same ten dimensions at the same rate. Two posters side by side, same size, 5 to 8 cm / 2 to 3 in apart, read as a set. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Four posters, ten sizes, one price
The posters with credits — the Academy Award and the original 1976 — need 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in for the small type at the foot to read. The flag poster, almost text free, holds from 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
How many posters are offered?
Four, in the Motif selector: the Academy Award version, the 2006 poster, the original 1976 artwork and a graphic flag version. All four come in the same ten sizes at the same price.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Why does the 1976 poster show no fight?
Because the film was sold as a story about two people. The artwork shows a man and a woman walking away hand in hand, with a tagline about a million to one shot — no ring, no gloves, no opponent anywhere on it.
Can two posters hang side by side?
Yes, in the same size, 5 to 8 cm / 2 to 3 in apart. At 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in a pair takes about 85 cm / 33 in of wall; at 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in, about 1.05 m / 41 in.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
