The third fight, no crowd and no referee
The third film, released in 1982, closes on a fight nobody sees: the two men, allies now after meeting twice in the ring, go back alone to an empty gym and put the gloves on for themselves. The image stops at the first exchange, before the result — which the film never gives. That is the moment this painting takes, and why there is no crowd, no ropes and no referee in the frame.
The two men go the full fifteen and the decision goes to the champion on a split of the judges. The film ends on a defeat — a rare choice for a sports film, and the reason the sequel exists. The idea comes from real boxing: at world level, more than half of championship fights go the distance and are settled on the scorecards rather than by knockout.
What you see
Landscape format, thick paint laid on with wide knives. The two characters hold the centre of the frame, mid exchange: the one on the left bent forward, the one on the right upright with dark hair. The gloves meet in the middle of the composition, in a zone of bright yellow.
No outline is ever closed: the bodies are built from juxtaposed red, apple green, turquoise, magenta and yellow, and the ground uses exactly the same colours, so figures and setting merge in places. No text, no names: it is the stance and the build that tell the two men apart. From 3 m / 10 ft you read an exchange; from 1 m / 3 ft only colour is left.

A palette knife painting is read from a distance
No outline is closed, so at a metre there is only paint and colour, and the scene only resolves as you step back. Plan for viewing distance rather than sheer size — 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in in a wide corridor, 100 × 150 cm / 39 × 59 in over a three-seater. How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
