The trunks of a father he never met
Creed came out in 2015, forty years after the first film. The lead, Adonis Johnson, played by Michael B. Jordan, is the son Apollo Creed had outside his marriage — and who was born after his father died in a ring. He refuses the name at first, then walks to the ring wearing his father's American flag trunks with CREED on the waistband.
The director, Ryan Coogler, was 29. Sylvester Stallone returned as the trainer and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2016, forty years after his nomination as lead actor for the first film. The trunks painted on this canvas are not a prop: they are the subject of the film.

Portrait format, beige to ochre ground worked as old paper, stained and scuffed. The boxer is framed from the thighs up, in a guard with his fists drawn in front of his chest, bare chested, in white boxing gloves with a small red logo.
The trunks carry the American flag — red and white bars, blue star field — with the name CREED in capitals on the waistband. Skin and setting are desaturated towards sepia, with drips running past the outlines. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a boxer in a guard on an old ground; from 1 m / 3 ft the name on the waistband becomes legible.
