Twelve rules written in 1867
What this canvas shows — one man down, one man standing, a count running — rests on a text published in 1867: the Queensberry rules. They were actually drafted by a Welsh athlete, John Graham Chambers, and published under the patronage of the 9th Marquess of Queensberry, whose name stuck to them.
Twelve articles, three of which shaped the sport as we watch it now: three minute rounds with a minute between them, a ten second count for a fighter who goes down, and gloves made compulsory. Before that men fought bare knuckled and a round simply ended when someone fell. Without those ten seconds the moment in this painting would not exist — it would already be over.
What you see
Landscape format, wide scene. The ring fills the whole foreground, blue ropes and a corner post in view. Ali stands left of centre, mouth open, white trunks with a black waistband, red gloves, forearms drawn across his chest. Sonny Liston lies on his back at the bottom centre, in red gloves too, head to the right.
Behind them, a theatre in full gilt: carved panelling, cornices, balustraded balconies lined with red velvet, a floor of spectators in dark suits and evening dresses, and a row of photographers leaning over the ring apron. The white mat carries a repeated pale grey pattern.
From 3 m / 10 ft you read a whole auditorium; from 1 m / 3 ft the faces in the crowd separate one by one.

Worth knowing: ten landscape sizes up to 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in make this the widest canvas of the Ali family, and one of the few that covers a three-seater in a single piece. The detail in the auditorium asks for 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in or more to stay readable from an armchair. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A wide scene asks for width
The subject is not only the two boxers: the hall, the balconies and the crowd take up two thirds of the surface. Below 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in the setting reads as texture; from 90 × 130 cm / 35 × 51 in every row of spectators can be picked out from the sofa. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What size canvas should I hang above a three-seater sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Where does the ten count in boxing come from?
From the Queensberry rules of 1867, drafted by John Graham Chambers and published under the name of the 9th Marquess of Queensberry. The same twelve articles introduced three minute rounds and made gloves compulsory. Before 1867 a round ended the moment a man went down, and there was no count at all.
Is this canvas landscape or portrait?
Landscape, in all ten sizes — 20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in through to 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in, always wider than it is tall. It is the widest piece in the Muhammad Ali range.
At what size does the crowd become readable?
From 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in the balconies and the front rows separate at normal viewing distance; at 90 × 130 cm / 35 × 51 in individual faces read from a sofa 3 m / 10 ft away.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
