The guard that made Tyson hard to hit
In the 1950s the trainer Cus D'Amato worked out a guard in which both fists sit against the cheeks, elbows tight, the upper body swaying constantly from side to side. It is called the peek-a-boo, after the game of hiding your face behind your hands. It demands closing the distance, so footwork and head movement — and it is with that guard that Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight world champion in history, at 20 years and 4 months, on 22 November 1986.
That is the position the engraving reproduces: the boxer caught with his hands high, before the attack.
What the visual shows
A boxer's torso in three-quarter view, broad shoulders, gloved fists raised in front of the chin, head slightly tucked. Outline and volumes are engraved in parallel lines through the thickness of the panel. No text, no brand. The panel measures 12.7 cm wide by 19.9 cm high / 5 by 7.8 in and slides into the slot of the round black base.
Lit, the engraving takes the chosen shade and the base throws a halo across the surface it stands on.
Power and settings
USB cable supplied or 3 AA batteries, not supplied, with settings by successive taps on the touch base. The table of two power options sets out what each involves, and the one thing to do before the first switch-on.Technical specifications

Good to know. No text, no brand: a boxer's torso in guard, on its own. On a shared desk or in a living room it reads as a graphic object first.

Frequently asked questions
How does an acrylic 3D lamp work?
The panel is laser engraved through its thickness, then lit from the edge by the base. Only the engraved lines light up; the rest of the panel stays clear, so the drawing appears to float above the base.
How big is the lamp?
The engraved panel measures 12.7 x 19.9 cm / 5 x 7.8 in, base not included. It is a bedside or shelf format, not room lighting.
What is the peek-a-boo guard?
A very closed guard, fists against the cheeks and the upper body moving laterally throughout, developed by Cus D'Amato. It made Mike Tyson famous, world heavyweight champion at 20 in 1986.
Do I need a mains adapter?
The USB cable is supplied, the wall plug is not. Any phone charger, USB strip or computer port will do. The alternative is 3 AA batteries in the base, and no cable at all.
How does it differ from the 3D boxer lamp?
The 3D boxer lamp adds a BOXING CLUB banner under the figure and comes with a remote. This one keeps the motif alone and is set from the base.
