Stars and stripes: a code of American boxing
A flag motif on boxing kit is not an isolated decorative choice: it is a code. Since the 1970s, American boxers walking out on an international card have worn it to say where they come from, exactly as a Mexican boxer wears green, white and red and a Briton the Union Jack. The kit stands in for the flag nobody can carry while fighting.
The layout is always the same: vertical red and white stripes across the body of the garment, a navy starred field kept for the borders — belt, cuffs, hems. That is the division found on this robe and on the shorts that go with it.
One detail is worth noting: the stars are never placed in the middle of the garment, always on the finishing bands. That is what lets the motif be recognised at a distance, even as the boxer moves.
The four make-ups
The selector does not offer colours but pieces. You choose what is in the parcel:
- Robe only: the long striped hooded robe, with its belt.
- Shorts only: satin shorts with red and white bands, navy waistband, starred hems.
- Sleeveless hoodie only: the red hooded jacket, zipped, sleeveless, with striped and starred hem.
- Sleeveless hoodie and shorts: the two pieces above together.
The pieces in detail
The robe: long, cut above the ankle, vertical red, white and blue stripes across the body and the sleeves. Black-lined hood, tied black belt with hanging ends, navy cuffs scattered with white stars.
The shorts: satin, vertical red and white bands, wide navy waistband, navy hems with white stars. Boxing cut, above the knee.
The sleeveless hoodie: plain red, hood, full zip, wide armholes leaving the arms completely free, red and white striped hem finished with a starred blue band.
Why a boxer walks out in a robe
The reason is physiological. Between the end of the warm-up in the changing room and the first bell, ten to twenty minutes often pass: presentation, the walk to the ring, the announcement of the fighters, the referee's instructions. Muscle temperature drops through all of it. The robe is there to hold it.
It is also why a boxing robe is satin rather than towelling. Towelling soaks up sweat and cools the body by evaporation — the opposite of what you want. Satin slides over the skin, comes off in one movement and absorbs nothing.
The third use came later: once fights were televised, the robe became the place for the name. Boxers had their own embroidered on it, or their gym's, or a sponsor's, and wore it back to camera for the whole walk.

Frequently asked questions
What is in the parcel?
Whatever the selector says: robe only, shorts only, sleeveless hoodie only, or hoodie and shorts. The four make-ups are on the same page, at prices from €39 to €79.
Which size should I take?
Seven sizes, XS to XXXL. European cut — take your usual size. A robe is worn over kit, so it is cut generously across the shoulders rather than fitted.
Why stars and stripes on boxing kit?
It is a code, not decoration. Since the 1970s American boxers have worn it on international cards to say where they come from, as a Mexican wears green, white and red. The stars go on the finishing bands, never in the middle, so the motif reads at a distance.
Is the sleeveless hoodie zipped?
Yes, full zip, with a hood and wide armholes that leave the arms completely free. The hem is red and white striped, finished with a starred blue band.
Does it come in large sizes?
Up to XXXL, which is the widest range in the robes collection. The XS at the other end fits junior and slight builds.
How do you look after a satin robe?
Cold hand wash or a delicate machine cycle in a net, no bleach, no tumble dryer. Hang it to dry on a wide hanger: satin creases readily and hanging is what avoids ironing. If you must iron, use a cool iron on the reverse.
