This is the headguard in the range built to take volume. Where a training model covers two sessions a week, this one is aimed at regular sparring and daily club use: full thickness leather, foam in three layers of different densities, reinforced ears. Headgear of this kind lasts several seasons of daily sparring without the foam losing its response.
What triple density foam actually changes
A single foam is a compromise: too soft and it bottoms out and passes the shock through, too firm and it returns the jolt instead of absorbing it. Padding in three stacked densities works in stages. The firmer outer layer spreads the impact surface so a fist does not concentrate its energy on one point. The softer middle and inner layers dissipate progressively what remains and follow the shape of the skull.
The difference shows less on the first shot than on the thirtieth: it is over the length of a session that single density padding tires and starts letting through. It shows over time too, since a single density foam takes the imprint of impacts sooner.
Real leather with a suede lining
The outside is real leather. It does not tear under the repeated rub of gloves, does not crack at the folds, and above all it moulds to the head: after a few weeks the headguard follows your skull and stops moving, which no synthetic does as well.
The inside is suede, chosen for two practical reasons: its velvet surface grips skin and hair slightly, which limits slipping mid-round, and it stays soft against the skin even soaked, where a smooth synthetic turns abrasive as soon as the sweat arrives.
The trade-off is accepted: leather asks for care. A dry cloth after each session, air drying and a leather milk once or twice a year keep it supple for ten years. If you want no upkeep at all, look at the microfibre model, which cleans with a damp cloth.
Areas covered
- Covered: forehead, crown, temples, ears with dedicated reinforcement, cheeks, jaw and chin.
- Open: the nose and the central line of sight. That opening is deliberate: it lets you read your partner's shoulders and footwork, and therefore slip rather than absorb.
The ear reinforcement is the detail that separates this model from standard training headgear. The ear is where a poorly absorbed hook does the most lasting damage, cauliflower ear being a cumulative and irreversible injury.
Choosing your size
Headgear should be fitted, not loose: too big and it rotates on impact and blocks your view, too small and it presses on the temples. Measure your head circumference with a tape, around 2 cm / 0.8 in above the eyebrows, and if you are unsure take the smaller size: the rear hook-and-loop takes up slack downwards, never upwards. The size ranges sit in the size guide for the range, which applies to every Esprit Boxe headguard.
Leather relaxes slightly over the first uses. New headgear that fits just snug will be right after two weeks; new headgear that already feels comfortably wide will be too big in a month.

Worth knowing: boxing headgear sharply reduces cuts, bruising and blows to the ears, but it does not remove the risk of concussion, and no headgear does. Protection comes first from a solid guard, a decent sparring partner and stopping immediately at the first symptom. This model also leaves the nose open: for nasal protection, take the face bar model. And real leather is not a no-upkeep material: without proper drying, it hardens.

Frequently asked questions
What does triple density foam bring over a single foam?
Three layers of different firmness work in stages: the firmest, on the outside, spreads the impact surface; the softer inner layers dissipate the remaining energy progressively. A single foam compromises between the two and tires sooner within a session. The difference shows mostly over the length of a sparring session, and over time, since single density foam takes the imprint of shots sooner.
How do you look after real leather headgear?
Wipe the inside with a dry cloth or an alcohol-free disinfectant wipe after each session, then let it air dry — never on a radiator or shut inside a bag: direct heat and prolonged damp are what harden leather. Once or twice a year, work in a thin coat of leather milk. Treated that way, a leather headguard easily lasts ten years.
Why a suede lining rather than a synthetic one?
For two practical reasons. The velvet surface of suede grips skin and hair slightly, which limits the headguard slipping mid-round. And it stays soft against the skin even soaked with sweat, where a smooth synthetic turns abrasive and rubs the temples.
Is this headgear suitable for club use?
That is what it is for. Real leather takes the repeated rub of gloves without tearing, triple density foam keeps its properties far longer than single padding, and the ear reinforcement protects the most exposed area in daily sparring. For a club kitting out several units, logo marking is available on quotation.
Does the leather stretch over time?
Slightly, over the first uses, and that is an advantage: the headguard ends up following the shape of your skull and stops moving. It changes the buying rule. New headgear that fits just snug will be right after two weeks; new headgear that already feels comfortably wide will be too big in a month.
Does it protect against cauliflower ear?
It clearly reduces the risk through its ear reinforcement, the ear being where a poorly absorbed hook does the most lasting damage. Since the injury is cumulative and irreversible, protecting it from the first years of practice is the best investment. Headgear alone does not remove it entirely, particularly in grappling where friction counts as much as impact.
